Major League Soccer (MLS) is the popular soccer league in the United States. It was founded in 1996. The league was founded to fulfill a promise made by the US Soccer Federation to the FIFA that it would establish a ‘Division One’ professional soccer league in exchange for staging the 1994 FIFA World Cup. It has thirteen teams in the US and one in Canada, which engage in as many as 30 regular season games in each season, running from March to November. Each team plays in an equal number of home and away matches. Eight teams from the league compete in a playoff leading to the championship final, the MLS Cup.
